For all of you gamers out there, here are 5 online games to check out that have an ancient Japanese or samurai theme (if I’ve missed any good ones please post them in the comments section).
- Nobunaga’s Ambition
Type: Turn-based strategy game with RPG elements…
This is a turn-based strategy game set during the Sengoku Jidai, another name for Japan’s “Warring States” period. You can choose to play as either Oda Nobunaga, Takeda Shingen, Uesugi Kenshin, Date Masamune, Chosokabe Motochika, Shimazu Yoshihiro, Mori Motonari, or Sanada Yukimura. Your objective is to conquer Japan, either via outright force or by marrying into the Tokugawa family. You can wage war in your usual manner with troops that you command directly in battles, but you also have two other methods of attack: trade and diplomacy.
Type: Side-scrolling action platformer…
Onmyoji is a side-scrolling action-platformer set during the Heian Period of ancient Japanese history. The player controls Abe no Seimei, who fights against a range of enemies using his magic brush techniques as well as shinigami . The game uses a special system where players change between three spirits at any time during battle. This allows the player to dodge attacks or use “spirit fusion” to attack enemies.
- Ninja Royale
Type: Top-down hack and slash…
This game is an action game with simple controls, but strategic depth. You play as one of many ninjas in the game, directing him through various missions where traps wait to be triggered, buildings must be climbed, guards must be sneaked past…you know the drill. After completing enough missions you’ll gain access to better weapons and armour that will allow you to complete more difficult missions.
- Gentlemen!
Type: Turn-based strategy…
Gentlemen is a turn-based strategy set during a fictional Russo-Japanese war. You can choose to play as either Russia or Japan , and must win battles against opponents on land, at sea, and in the air if you wish to defeat them. The AI is solid making this one a difficult but fun game to pick up and put down whenever there’s free time (or when it’s too hot/cold/rainy/snowy outside).
- Way of the Samurai 3
Type: Action Adventure RPG (with some slight strategy elements)
Way of the Samurai 3 is set during Japan’s Bakumatsu period (1853-1867), which was marked by intense social upheaval as Japan rapidly modernized and transitioned from a feudal state to a capitalist empire. In the game, you play as a samurai during this period, where your choices affect later events in the story. You can choose to help or betray various factions like The Shinsengumi, Miyoshi Trio, and Imperial Court.
There are a lot of games presenting Japan’s Sengoku Jidai period. Most of them are turn-based strategy games with RPG elements or set in the platformer genre. Samura, ninja, and other historical Japanese figures are prominent in most of these games. Some take place during Japan’s Bakumatsu period, others Sengoku Jidai, but they all present interesting histories that help you understand where certain aspects of modern-day Japan came from including bushido, ninjutsu/shinobi, samurai/katana/yumi, etc.
