AMD video card lines and markings

When buying a video card from AMD, it can be difficult to understand its positioning: is it average, or is it weak? In this article, we will tell you about the main lines and families of AMD video cards, explain their markings, positioning and meanings of letter indices.

After buying ATI in 2006, AMD has its own graphics division that competes with NVIDIA. In the last article about NVIDIA video cards, we figured out the lines, labeling and positioning of various video adapters from this company. Now we have to do the same with solutions from AMD.

This article will not cover video chips until 2010. More information on specifications can be found on the AMD website.

This line of video cards was created not for ordinary users and games, but for professionals who earn money by working at a computer. These video cards are used for

  • CAD applications (design)
  • CAE applications (engineering calculations, simulations, modeling),
  • CAM applications (automation of programming and control of equipment with CNC (numerical control) or GAPS (flexible automated production systems)),
  • video,
  • animations,
  • design,
  • GPU computing,
  • servers,
  • multi-monitor solutions.

Their cost varies widely: from a couple of hundred to thousands of dollars. For games, these video cards are poorly suited, since drivers are not sharpened for them. Drivers are tailored for professional applications and allow you to unleash the potential of the chips in them.

W / V

This letter denotes cards intended for CAE / CAD applications, video, animation, design, multi-monitor solutions. Equipped with an active cooling system.

As we found out (correct if we are wrong) the letter V is the old designation, and W is the new one.

This series of graphics cards is designed for servers and GPU computing. They do well with FP32 (single precision calculations, 32 bit floating point calculations) and FP64 (double precision calculations, 64 bit floating point calculations). They have a passive cooling system. It happens that these are the same W-models, but with passive cooling.

Video cards with the ability to work remotely. They enable secure remote operation of professional graphics applications in the cloud. These maps are suitable for CAD / CAE / CAM developers.

Unmarked cards mainly denote models for multi-display solutions.

Radeon Sky Series

Despite the name of this line, it was not created for ordinary users, although they are directly related to games. These are server cards for “cloud game streaming. This means that the games are processed on the servers of some company, and you only receive the finished streaming video (in the absence of delays, it will be as comfortable to play as always).

Here, the higher the number, the better the card.

FirePro APU

These are hybrid processors for CAD systems and entertainment content development (M&E), and for solving simpler tasks, for example, in the field of personnel management. You can get acquainted with the models at the link.

A large number after the name of the line means more performance.

Letter indices:

  • X2 dual-chip graphics card
  • M mobile graphics card
  • DVI card supports DualView mode (expanding the work area on two high-resolution displays)
  • The SDI video card supports SDI-Link technology (used for post-production processing and real-time TV broadcasting with GPU acceleration) and has an SDI interface.
  • The X model is designed as an MXM module.

We will not characterize the numbers, as there is a very confusing structure that can be misleading. You can learn more about the models themselves and their features on this page.

Almost all cards on sale are built on the GCN architecture, but decrypting a specific generation is quite problematic due to frequent rebranding.

Radeon Pro

Yes, the name is very similar to Radeon, but there are slight differences. So far there are very few maps in this line, but most of them will be designed for working in CAE / CAD applications, creating VR videos, etc.

There is also one AMD Radeon Pro Duo gaming / computing card built on 2 Fiji XT chips.

And as part of this line, they announced AMD Radeon Pro Solid State Graphics (SSG), in which it will be possible to install 2 SSDs in a RAID 0 array, which will comfortably process 8K RAW video. It is also noted that this model is perfect for designers, developers, doctors and other areas where real-time rendering of images is needed. The chip will be the Polaris 10, the one on which the AMD Radeon RX 470 and RX 480 are built.

Interesting fact: The AMD Radeon Pro SSG video card will have 1 TB memory installed, only this memory will be SSD, and the price of the new product will be a whopping $ 9999!

This line was introduced as part of the Polaris architecture.

The series has the same meaning as FirePro W / V, namely work with CAE / CAD applications, video, animation, design, VR. Equipped with an active cooling system.

I hope we helped you understand the lines and nomenclature of AMD video cards, which will help you in choosing it. It was not so detailed about the FirePro, because these cards are quite specific and there is not so much information on them, and besides, they cannot be bought in retail. If you have any questions, then first look at the section “Introduction, if you still have questions, then express yourself in the comments.
