Everything you need to know about the AMD Radeon RX 480

On the first day of summer, on the second day of Computex 2016, we were announced the first graphics card from AMD of the new Polaris architecture, which used the new 14 Nm FinFET process technology and the new GCN 1.3 architecture, where many GPU blocks were updated.

Appearance and cooling system

The card has a shortened board and a typical reference design similar to the one used in Fiji cards (Fury, Fury X, Nano). A centrifugal fan is used, in this case it was removed from the board. Power is supplied via a 6-pin contact. The rather old DVI has disappeared from the list of video outputs, leaving 3 DisplayPort 1.3 / 1.4 (the second one supports HDR) and 1 HDMI 2.0b.

A little about changes and positioning

In addition to the new 14 Nm FinFET process from GlobalFoundries and the new generation of GCN architecture, the new graphics card supports AMD FreeSync. Also, as you can see, the marking of new AMD video cards has changed, which can be found at the link.

As you can see, the video card will be great for VR (as discussed at the presentation) and 1080p. With its fairly affordable price tag, AMD will be able to push back the GTX 970 and GTX 980 in the middle / high (middle-end) segment. But it will have to compete with the GTX 1060, the new graphics card from NVIDIA of the Pascal generation.

There was also news that NVIDIA was very concerned about the price of new items and is thinking, among other things, to reduce the price of its not yet released GTX 1060.

AMD also showed us some benchmarks. It follows from them that 2 video cards are able to compete with the GTX 1080 for a $ 200 lower price. But we all understand that there is little point in taking a bunch of 2 mid-range video cards, since there are quite a few problems with CrossFireX. Better to take a more expensive single-chip video card.

Performance tests

At the moment, the first tests of this video card have appeared in 3DMark 11 Performance.

These results show that the card should really handle VR projects, as it is positioned.

Here’s some more synthetics:

At the moment, gaming tests of this video card have already appeared. This link contains Overclockers.ru tests (there are several review pages, so you have to flip through). We also recommend that you familiarize yourself with 3dnews tests (also several pages).
If you are too lazy to read, we recommend watching this video:

To summarize, it turns out that the new product is on average on a par with the Radeon R9 390 and GTX 970.

Which processor will the AMD Radeon RX 480 drive?

In general, we have a good article on the topic of disclosing a video card, and judging by the results of this video card in games, to fully disclose this adapter in all game projects with a margin for the future, it will need Intel Core i5 of the Haswell generation and above. In the case of Sandy / Ivy Bridge, you need a higher frequency Core i5.

Also, this video card can work normally in tandem with Intel Core i3 generation Skylake and AMD FX-8300 with a frequency higher than 4 GHz. But with these processors it will not show its maximum and they do not have a certain margin for the future.

Prices and release date

The new graphics card comes out at a suggested (US tax excluded) price of $ 199 for the 4GB version and $ 229 for the 8GB version.
The release date is scheduled for June 29 this year. At the same time, the RX 470 with the RX 460 will presumably be released.

Unfortunately, we are afraid that even such a product, which seems to be so successful at first glance, may not help AMD to make a profit, since it is sold not much more than the cost price 🙁

And in the comments, you can write your opinion on the new product “Red and what do you think about the answer from NVIDIA in the person of GTX 1060?
