Sonic Origins Cheat Codes: Level Select, Debug Mode & Super Sonic
Complete cheat code guide for Sonic Origins including level select, debug mode, Super Sonic, and Hyper Sonic codes for all four games in the collection.
Sonic Origins Cheat Codes: Level Select, Debug Mode & Super Sonic
Sonic Origins cheat codes are active across three of the four games in the collection — Sonic 1, Sonic 2, and Sonic 3 & Knuckles — giving you access to level select, debug mode, Super Sonic, and Hyper Sonic. Each game uses the same two-step process: enter a title screen code to unlock the Level Select menu, then play specific Sound Test numbers to activate individual cheats. Sonic CD currently has no working cheats in Origins. Cheats do not block trophies or achievements.
Below is everything you need, game by game, with exact button sequences for PlayStation, Xbox, and Switch.
How Sonic Origins Cheat Codes Actually Work
Every cheat in Sonic Origins follows the same two-stage system inherited from the original Mega Drive releases. Stage one: enter a directional input on the title screen — before you press Start, while you’re looking at the game’s logo. If you’ve done it correctly, you’ll hear a confirmation sound effect. That unlocks the Level Select screen, which sits above the normal game start option and includes a Sound Test.
Stage two is where the real cheats live. Sound Test lets you queue up numbered audio tracks. Play them in the right sequence and you’ll hear another confirmation — a ring collect sound for debug mode, an emerald sound for Super Sonic or all emeralds. Then pick your stage and the cheat is live.
A few things worth knowing before you start:
- Cheats work in both Classic and Anniversary modes — no restrictions either way.
- Multiple cheats stack. You can run Debug Mode and Super Sonic simultaneously in the same run.
- Debug Mode turns Sonic into a placeable object. On PlayStation, press Circle to toggle object mode; on Xbox it’s B; on Switch it’s A. From there you can cycle through items, place them freely, and pass through solid geometry — useful for reaching the end of a stage without playing through it.
- Trophy and achievement tracking remains fully active while cheats are on. If you want to use level select to jump straight to a final boss and use Debug Mode’s invincibility to guarantee a completion trophy, that works.
One important caveat: the input sequences below are specific to Sonic Origins. The Mega Drive originals and earlier ports sometimes use different codes — don’t mix them up.
Sonic 1 Cheat Codes
Level Select
On the title screen, press: Up, Down, Left, Right. You’ll hear a chime. Now press any button to reach the Level Select screen. This version of the Level Select is notably expanded compared to the original — you can toggle Sonic 2’s Spin Dash into Sonic 1, enable items from later games in the series, and more.
All Chaos Emeralds
With Level Select unlocked, go to Sound Test and play: 04 → 01 → 02 → 06. The emerald-collected jingle confirms it worked.
Debug Mode
With Level Select unlocked, go to Sound Test and play: 01 → 09 → 09 → 01 → 00 → 06 → 02 → 03. You’ll hear a ring-collected sound. Select any stage to begin with Debug Mode active.
| Cheat | Title Screen Input | Sound Test Sequence | Confirmation Sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level Select | Up, Down, Left, Right | — | Chime |
| All Chaos Emeralds | Level Select required | 04, 01, 02, 06 | Emerald jingle |
| Debug Mode | Level Select required | 01, 09, 09, 01, 00, 06, 02, 03 | Ring collect |
Sonic 2 Cheat Codes
Level Select
On the title screen, press: Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right. Wait for the sound, then press any button.
Super Sonic
With Level Select active, go to Sound Test and play: 04 → 01 → 02 → 06. Same sequence as Sonic 1’s emeralds code — same emerald jingle confirms it. During gameplay, collect 50 rings, then press Triangle (PS) / Y (Xbox) / X (Switch) while airborne to transform.
Debug Mode
With Level Select active, go to Sound Test and play: 01 → 09 → 09 → 02 → 01 → 01 → 02 → 04. Ring sound confirms it. The debug sequence for Sonic 2 is distinct from Sonic 1’s — don’t use the wrong one or nothing happens.
| Cheat | Title Screen Input | Sound Test Sequence | Confirmation Sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level Select | Up ×3, Down ×3, Left, Right, Left, Right | — | Chime |
| Super Sonic | Level Select required | 04, 01, 02, 06 | Emerald jingle |
| Debug Mode | Level Select required | 01, 09, 09, 02, 01, 01, 02, 04 | Ring collect |
Sonic 3 & Knuckles Cheat Codes
Sonic 3 & Knuckles has the most cheat options of the four games, and its Level Select entry is slightly different in structure — it doesn’t give you immediate access from the title screen in the same way.
Level Select
On the title screen, press: Up, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up, Up, Up. Then, on the main menu, press Down twice until the Sound Test option appears. The Level Select is nested inside it here rather than sitting as a separate screen.
Super Sonic
With Level Select active, play Sound Test: 04 → 01 → 02 → 06. Emerald jingle confirms. Collect 50 rings in-game, then press the jump button while airborne to activate. Works with Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles depending on who you’re playing as.
Hyper Sonic
This is Sonic 3 & Knuckles’ exclusive cheat — and the most powerful transformation in the collection. Play Sound Test: 04 → 01 → 02 → 06 → 04 → 01 → 02 → 06. That’s the Super Sonic sequence entered twice back-to-back. You’ll hear the emerald jingle halfway through and again at the end — both sounds need to play for Hyper Sonic to activate. Same 50-ring mid-air jump trigger as Super Sonic. Hyper Sonic flashes through multiple colors, moves faster than Super Sonic, and destroys all enemies on screen when you perform a mid-air dash.
Debug Mode
With Level Select active, play Sound Test: 01 → 09 → 09 → 04 → 01 → 00 → 01 → 08. Ring sound confirms. Each game’s debug sequence is unique — this one won’t work if you try it in Sonic 1 or 2.
| Cheat | Title Screen Input | Sound Test Sequence | Confirmation Sound |
|---|---|---|---|
| Level Select | Up, Up, Down, Down, Up ×4 | — | Chime |
| Super Sonic | Level Select required | 04, 01, 02, 06 | Emerald jingle |
| Hyper Sonic | Level Select required | 04, 01, 02, 06, 04, 01, 02, 06 | Two emerald jingles |
| Debug Mode | Level Select required | 01, 09, 09, 04, 01, 00, 01, 08 | Ring collect |
Sonic CD Cheat Code Status
As of December 2024, no working cheat codes have been found in the Sonic Origins version of Sonic CD. The original 1993 release and its 2011 remaster both had a level select, but neither set of codes translates to the Origins build.
The other three games in the collection do have working cheats, which suggests Sonic CD’s may exist but haven’t been surfaced yet — or were deliberately removed during porting. Community testing hasn’t confirmed anything functional to date. Until something surfaces, Sonic CD plays straight through with no shortcuts available.
Stacking Cheats: What Works Together
Here’s something the menus never tell you: all these cheats are additive. Enter the all-emeralds Sound Test code in Sonic 1, then immediately enter the Debug Mode sequence in the same Sound Test session without leaving the screen. Both activate. Start your stage and you’ve got every emerald collected plus full debug object access running simultaneously.
The most useful combination for completion runs is Super Sonic (or Hyper Sonic in S3&K) plus Level Select. Jump to a late-game stage, collect 50 rings early, transform, and you’re largely invulnerable for the rest of the level. Pair that with Debug Mode if you want to skip directly to the act’s end goal without playing through it at all.
One edge case worth flagging: if you’re playing Sonic 3 & Knuckles and enter the Hyper Sonic code, you don’t also need the Super Sonic code separately. Hyper Sonic supersedes it — entering Super Sonic’s sequence alone only gives you Super Sonic. Hyper requires the full double sequence.
Using Cheats Without Blocking Your Trophies
This is where Sonic Origins differs meaningfully from some other remaster collections that lock achievements behind a “no cheats” condition. In Origins, cheat activation does not disable trophy or achievement tracking. The game treats cheats as optional modifiers rather than flags that invalidate a run.
What that means practically: you can use Level Select to jump to the final boss of any game, activate Debug Mode for effective invincibility, defeat the boss, and the “complete the game” trophy unlocks normally. For players who want the platinum on PlayStation or full achievement completion on Xbox and Steam, this cuts the required time substantially.
The Debug Mode invincibility method is particularly reliable for final bosses where normal play requires multiple attempts. In Debug Mode, you can phase through the boss’s attack hitboxes entirely, or simply place objects to manipulate the arena. Neither triggers any trophy restriction.
That said — if you’re aiming for a specific challenge trophy that requires finishing a game without dying, using level select to skip to an easier stage or section may make that harder to track intentionally. The game doesn’t block trophies, but it also doesn’t tell you which conditions you’ve met mid-run. Keep that in mind if you’re targeting a specific achievement rather than a completion sweep.
Frequently Asked Questions
Do Sonic Origins cheat codes work on all platforms?
Yes. The cheat sequences are identical across PlayStation, Xbox, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The only difference is Debug Mode’s toggle button once active: Circle on PlayStation, B on Xbox, A on Switch.
Why isn’t my Level Select code working in Sonic 3?
Sonic 3 & Knuckles handles Level Select differently. After entering the title screen code (Up, Up, Down, Down, Up ×4), you need to go to the main menu and press Down twice to reveal the Sound Test — Level Select is inside it, not a standalone option. If you’re pressing Start immediately after the title screen input, that’s likely why it’s not triggering.
Can I use Super Sonic in Sonic 1 with cheats?
Not directly — Sonic 1’s cheat gives you all Chaos Emeralds, but the original game has no Super Sonic transformation mechanic built in. The expanded Level Select in Origins does let you toggle in Spin Dash and other abilities from later games, but Super Sonic specifically isn’t available in Sonic 1 even with cheats active.
Does Hyper Sonic only work in Sonic 3 & Knuckles?
Yes. Hyper Sonic is exclusive to Sonic 3 & Knuckles — both in the original game and in Sonic Origins. It’s not accessible in Sonic 1, Sonic 2, or Sonic CD regardless of cheat codes.
Will Sonic CD ever get cheat codes in Origins?
No confirmed codes exist as of December 2024. Community testing has found nothing functional. Whether codes are present but undiscovered, or were removed entirely in the Origins port, isn’t known. The other three games’ cheats working normally makes it a reasonable question — but there’s nothing to enter right now.
