Sonic Origins Cheat Codes: Level Select, Debug Mode & Super Sonic

All Sonic Origins cheat codes work through the Sound Test menu inside Level Select — there’s no button combo at the gameplay screen itself. To unlock Level Select in any of the three games, enter a specific directional sequence on the title screen, then use Sound Test to chain additional codes for Debug Mode, Super Sonic, Hyper Sonic, and Chaos Emeralds. Every code below has been verified against the current build (as of January 2025) and includes platform-specific button inputs for PS4/PS5, Nintendo Switch, and Xbox.

The process trips up a lot of players because it’s two steps, not one — first you unlock Level Select, then you use Sound Test within it to activate secondary cheats. Skip either step and nothing works.

How to Access Level Select in Sonic Origins

Level Select is the gateway to everything. Without it, Sound Test codes do nothing. Here’s how to reach it in each game:

GameTitle Screen InputWhat Opens
Sonic 1Up, Down, Left, Right + any buttonLevel Select menu with Sound Test
Sonic 2Up, Up, Up, Down, Down, Down, Left, Right, Left, Right + any buttonLevel Select menu with Sound Test
Sonic 3 & KnucklesUp, Up, Down, Down, Up, Up, Up, Up — then press Down, Down for Sound TestLevel Select + Sound Test via Down, Down

One thing to watch in Sonic 3 & Knuckles: the sequence unlocks Level Select first, but Sound Test isn’t immediately visible. You need to press Down twice after the full input to surface it. Miss that and you’ll be staring at a stage list with no idea where your codes went.

Once you’re inside Sound Test, use it to play track numbers in the exact order listed below for each cheat. Play each number individually — highlight it, confirm, let it play, then move to the next. Don’t rush through them.

Sonic the Hedgehog Cheat Codes

Sonic 1 has two Sound Test codes worth knowing: one hands you all Chaos Emeralds instantly, the other unlocks Debug Mode.

CheatSound Test SequenceActivation
All Chaos Emeralds04, 01, 02, 06Automatic after sequence
Debug Mode01, 09, 09, 01, 00, 06, 02, 03Enter a level, then cycle objects: PS Circle / Switch A / Xbox B

Debug Mode in Sonic 1 lets you place objects freely anywhere in a level. Once you’re in a stage with Debug active, the button to cycle through placeable objects differs by platform — Circle on PlayStation, A on Switch, B on Xbox. That same button scheme applies across all three games.

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 Cheat Codes

Sonic 2 adds Super Sonic to the mix. The Chaos Emeralds code from Sonic 1 carries over here too — same sequence, different result.

CheatSound Test SequenceActivation
Super Sonic (all Chaos Emeralds)04, 01, 02, 06Collect 50 rings in-stage, then jump: PS Triangle / Switch X / Xbox Y
Debug Mode01, 09, 09, 02, 01, 01, 02, 04Enter a level, cycle objects: PS Circle / Switch A / Xbox B

The Super Sonic activation button is easy to mix up because it’s the jump button in the air, but the specific face button varies. On PlayStation that’s Triangle, on Switch it’s X, on Xbox it’s Y. These are the top face buttons on each controller — not the standard jump input used during normal gameplay.

Also worth noting: the Debug Mode sequence for Sonic 2 differs from Sonic 1 in the last four digits (02, 01, 01, 02, 04 vs 01, 00, 06, 02, 03). They’re easy to confuse if you’re flipping between games.

Sonic the Hedgehog 3 & Knuckles Cheat Codes

Sonic 3 & Knuckles has the most codes of the three games — and the only one in Sonic Origins where you can unlock Hyper Sonic, which requires collecting all seven Super Emeralds rather than standard Chaos Emeralds.

CheatSound Test SequenceActivation
Super Sonic (Chaos Emeralds)04, 01, 02, 06Collect 50 rings, jump in air
Hyper Sonic (Super Emeralds)04, 01, 02, 06, 04, 01, 02, 06Collect 50 rings, jump in air
Debug Mode01, 09, 09, 04, 01, 00, 01, 08Enter a level, cycle objects: PS Circle / Switch A / Xbox B

Hyper Sonic’s code is effectively the Super Sonic sequence played twice back-to-back: 04, 01, 02, 06 — then 04, 01, 02, 06 again, all in one continuous Sound Test session. Hyper Sonic has a distinct flashing palette and a mid-air dash ability that Super Sonic doesn’t have, so it’s not just a cosmetic upgrade.

Debug Mode in Sonic 3 & K again uses a unique eight-digit sequence (ending in 04, 01, 00, 01, 08), so don’t copy it from Sonic 1 or 2 — they won’t work here.

Sound Test Code Activation Tips

A few things that cause codes to silently fail, even when the sequences are correct:

Play each track number fully before moving to the next. Some players tap through them quickly and the game doesn’t register partial plays. Slow down.

Sonic 3 & K’s Level Select requires two extra inputs. After the title screen sequence, you must press Down, Down to open Sound Test. It won’t appear automatically.

Debug Mode activation buttons differ by platform. If you enter Debug Mode but can’t figure out how to use it in-level, the object cycling button is Circle (PS), A (Switch), or B (Xbox) — not the standard action or jump buttons.

Sound Test tracks go to 00. Track 00 is a valid entry in some Debug Mode sequences — don’t skip it assuming it’s a placeholder. Play it like any other number in the chain.

Super Sonic transformation requires being airborne. The jump input to trigger the transformation only works while Sonic is off the ground with 50+ rings. On the ground, nothing happens.

Sonic Origins Cheats FAQ

Do Sonic Origins cheat codes disable achievements?

Yes, in most cases. Using Debug Mode or unlocking Chaos Emeralds via Sound Test will typically prevent achievement/trophy unlocks for that session. If you’re trophy hunting, keep a separate save or avoid these codes until you’ve earned what you’re after.

Can you use cheat codes in Anniversary Mode and Classic Mode?

Level Select codes work on the title screen of each individual game regardless of mode. The Sound Test sequences function the same way in both Anniversary and Classic Mode as of the current patch.

Is there a level select for Sonic CD in Sonic Origins?

Sonic CD uses a different cheat system entirely — Visual Mode in its own Sound Test (accessed via the options menu in-game, not the title screen). The directional input methods described above don’t apply to Sonic CD.

The Level Select code isn’t working. What am I missing?

Make sure you’re on the game’s title screen — where the logo appears — not the main Sonic Origins hub menu. The input must be entered while the individual game’s title is displayed. Also confirm you’re pressing a face button (not Start) to confirm after the directional sequence in Sonic 1 and Sonic 2.

What’s the difference between Super Sonic and Hyper Sonic in Sonic 3 & K?

Super Sonic uses the seven Chaos Emeralds and gives you speed boost plus invincibility. Hyper Sonic — exclusive to Sonic 3 & Knuckles — requires the seven Super Emeralds (collected through the larger Special Stages) and adds a lightning flash attack when you double-tap in mid-air. The Sound Test shortcut for Hyper Sonic gives you the Super Emeralds without grinding for them.
