Mass effect 2

The 2010 year. Genre – RPG

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360

The Mass Effect space saga is often compared to Star Wars. In this case, the second (and, what’s better) part of the series is “The Empire Strikes Back”, a more ambitious and epic sequel that extends the mythology of its predecessor. The main character wanders on the ship “Normandy” on bizarre planets, collects a team to deal with the universal threat, and is constantly getting into trouble. The masterpiece, which the creators of the Canadian studio BioWare, failed to surpass.

The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim

2011. Genre – RPG

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Xbox 360, PS3, VR

The game that has been with us forever – its publisher, Bethesda, still continues to release Skyrim on all kinds of platforms, including smart toilets. Why not – the players continue to love her. This is a huge world in which you want to live: to fish from a river, enjoy the sunsets, explore the dungeons, hunt dragons.

Skyrim has changed the approach to creating modern role-playing games, their structure, and the study of the world and tasks. The best version still went to the owners of computers – they can install amateur mods and turn Skyrim into an ultimate role-playing game where freedom of choice is limited only by the imagination of the players.

Dark souls

2011. Genre – RPG

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS3, and Xbox 360

Dark Souls is no longer a game or a series, but an independent genre invented by Japanese game designer Hidetaka Miyazaki. This is an inventive simulator where players can be defeated by anyone, even the puniest opponent. Needless to say, omnipotent bosses, which can take two to three hours to kill. The Dark Souls series and its successors like Bloodborne from the same Miyazaki are games about mistakes, patience, and overcoming difficulties. During their passage, you can learn a lot about yourself.

Portal 2

2011. Genre – First-Person Puzzle

Platforms: PC, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360

An exciting puzzle from the authors of Half-Life. The mechanics are simple: the main character has a gun that opens portals in blue and orange. With their help, a girl can move in space. The player needs to figure out how to proceed further by jumping through the portals and taking into account the laws of physics. Portal 2 is also a charming and surprisingly touching story about the escape from the Aperture Science research center and the GLaDOS supercomputer.

Minecraft

2011. Genre – virtual constructor

Platform: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS3, Xbox 360, iOS, Android, PS Vita (and that’s not all!)

The most popular and advanced virtual designer in the world, conquering millions of children and adults. Here you can build an iPhone, an airplane out of slime and pistons, or a functioning hard drive (for as many as four kilobytes!). You can even build a miniature version of Krasnodar. Minecraft, like no other game in the world, develops imagination and creative thinking. It is not surprising that many children have switched from real designers to this interactive one.

Minecraft – Video Game Review

L.A. Noire

2011. Genre – a detective with action elements

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS3, and Xbox 360

Almost 10 years after the release, the L.A. concept Noire is still amazing. The authors attracted dozens of actors and recorded facial expressions using motion capture technology. And all in order to create the most convincing cop simulator.

The action takes place in 1947 in Los Angeles. Developers offer to get used to the role of a meticulous novice detective. Players will have to look for evidence on crime scenes, interview witnesses, and determine by their faces, intonations, and behavior whether they are lying, and this is not so simple. You can make a mistake and accidentally send an innocent to jail (then you will also have to listen to the displeased boss). All this intertwines with the dramatic story of human vices and post-war Los Angeles. Normal competitors for L.A. Noire not yet.

Diablo 3

the year 2012. Genre – RPG

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, PS3, and Xbox 360

Diablo 3 is one of those hypnotic games that you launch literally for half an hour, and they turn into an hour, two, three. And it’s not a complicated story or memorable characters – it’s just a stamped fantasy. Diablo 3 just has fun chopping up devils. You can do it with magic, you can with arrows or swords. You can do it alone, or in the company of friends who sit next to you and help you deal with the next boss. It’s all about the pace of the game, your own desire to sway, and immediately get the best blades, staves, or some rare pants of omnipotence. An ideal way to pass the time, especially since Diablo 3 is not out of date since 2012.

Journey

the year 2012. Genre – adventure game

Platforms: PC, PS4, PS3, and iOS

An interactive philosophical parable that everyone interprets in accordance with their worldview. The main character, a mysterious creature in a cloak, hood, and scarf, wanders through the desert to the mountain looming in the distance. There are other players on the way, but you can’t directly interact with them: there is no chat, and users do not have nicknames. The journey takes place to the pacifying music of composer Austin Wintory, who was nominated for a Grammy for his work on Journey. One of the most meditative, important, and atypical games of this decade, which everyone should go through.

Grand Theft Auto 5

the year 2013. Genre – Action

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360

Movie fans have Quentin Tarantino and Guy Ritchie, and game fans have brothers Sam and Dan Hauser, producers, and screenwriters of the Grand Theft Auto and Red Dead Redemption series. For many years, they have been telling stories about assorted bandits robbing at the end of the nineteenth century, then in the 1980s, nowadays.

GTA 5 completely fits into their familiar pattern: Hausers pushed together with each other at once three unlucky criminals from California, each of whom can now be played (the authors used to be limited to one hero). Something truly great did not work out of this story, but the characters, as they say, went to the people. Heroes are still happy to quote, but they love GTA 5 primarily for the huge open world in which you can do anything from skydiving to hunting rare animals. Again, in the version for computers, mods further expand this freedom.

In the online part of the game called GTA Online, players gang up, rob banks, and play cops. In short, they do what they want. GTA 5 is clearly in the near future will not disappear from the tops of sales. Like Skyrim, this is an eternal game, relevant regardless of how many years have passed since its release.

Dota 2

the year 2013. Genre – Team Network Strategy (MOBA)

Platform: PC

The game, due to which thousands of Russian schoolchildren and students skipped classes, dreaming of becoming rich e-sportsmen. Over the past 10 years, eSports and specifically Dota 2 have grown stronger and become a phenomenon that cannot be ignored. And by the intensity of their passions, the Dota world championships sometimes surpass the world football championships.

In addition, Dota 2 has largely influenced memes and modern network slang. Of course, instead of “Dota” in this top could be its more popular competitor abroad – League of Legends. But we are all the same in Russia, and if so, then gg vp!

Bioshock Infinite

year 2013. Genre Shooter

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3, and Xbox 360

The main work of American game designer Ken Levine. In the first part of BioShock, Levin created an amazing, unlike anything dystopian about an underwater city in which everything went awry. In Infinite, the game designer is already exploring religion, capitalism, class stratification, and cheers-patriotism – and is buried in fiction and parallel worlds. To do this, he sends players from the bottom to heaven, namely, to the flying city of Colombia. Levin masterfully rhymes Infinite with the first part of BioShock, inventing new meanings for both games and drawing a much more complex picture than it seems at first glance.

The last of us

year 2013. Genre – Action

Platforms: PS4 and PS3

An unexpected drama about personal growth, selfishness, and choice from the authors of the frivolous adventure Uncharted – studio Naughty Dog. Mentally hardened Joel travels through ruined America along with an adult girl Ally, fighting off terrible zombies and dishonest bandits. This is a piercing story disguised as an action movie with a zombie apocalypse, with a non-Hollywood ending. Not to cry in the final will not work.

Batman: Arkham Knight

The 2015 year. Genre – Action

Platforms: PC, PS4, and Xbox One

The epic finale of the Batman game story that Rocksteady began in 2009 with breakthrough Batman: Arkham Asylum. Arkham Knight – the largest and most technologically advanced game in the series. Finally, races and battles on the Batmobile were added to it (do not ask how the superhero manages to not mutilate anyone on the road, shooting enemies from a machine gun!). And the battles tied to two buttons, which became the brand card of the series, have become even smoother and more spectacular. As a result, Arkham Knight turned out to be an ideal simulator of the dark knight – a superhero who works not only with his fists but also with his head.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt

The 2015 year. Genre – RPG

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

The best role-playing game of the decade, which, together with its two additions, claims to be the best game in the world. In the third part, the authors gained experience, re-invented the level structure (now this is an open world with many quests), and wrote some exorbitant amount of emotional scenes. Only in the third “The Witcher” can the main characters, playing the feast “I never …”, get completely drunk and change into the clothes of local sorceresses for an argument. Or, traveling in a boat, for the sake of jokes to compose obscene rhyme about each other. Well, where else, if not in The Witcher, can you find a satirical quest about bank employees who always need strange certificates and forms? Wild Hunt is an infinitely talented, intense, exciting, and simply beautiful game that cannot be overestimated.

Pokemon GO

The 2016 year. Genre – augmented reality network game

Platforms: iOS and Android

Pokemon GO revealed that the future is in mobile games with augmented reality. In 2016, millions of users around the world took to the streets and began to catch outlandish Pokemon (however, this did not end well for everyone). Otherwise, it cannot be called a fever – all of a sudden, interest in games and painted monsters have awakened even among those who have been carefully avoiding them for years. As a result, even Catholics and the authorities of Moscow undertook to develop their Pokemon GO analogs, where instead of Pokemon there were Pushkin and Lomonosov.

Doom

The 2016 year. Genre Shooter

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

A modern restart of the Doom classic shooter series, with which many began their acquaintance with video games. The return turned out to be triumphant: the version of 2016 in the first minutes of battle strikes with maximum dynamism and cruelty. The protagonist, under a roaring rock, tears apart enemies, cuts with a chainsaw, shoots from a rocket launcher. And each arena with enemies is a tricky puzzle that must be solved with a competent choice of tactics and weapons. Best of all, the game unfolds at high levels of difficulty (although it will not be boring under any circumstances!).

Firewatch

The 2016 year. Genre – Walking Simulator

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

Henry, the protagonist of Firewatch, flees from himself. He takes a job as an observer of a fire tower in the Shoshone National Forest, Wyoming. His loneliness is constantly interrupted – either by curious tourists or by the manager of Delilah, who contacts him by walkie-talkie. Soon, Henry is faced with something extremely suspicious, he thinks that he may have become embroiled in a certain conspiracy. At the same time, Delilah remains his only interlocutor, to whom he is gradually imbued with sympathy, or maybe something more.

There is nothing in Firewatch but wanderings around a fantastically beautiful park and frank conversations with Delilah. And this, oddly enough, is enough to remember the four hours spent playing the game for a lifetime. The final deceives any expectations.

Overwatch

The 2016 year. Genre – Network Shooter

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

Blizzard has released a team network shooter for those who are tired of team network shooters. In the arsenal of Overwatch – catchy cards and bright heroes with unique abilities. There is even a conditional plot, which is revealed through short animated films – the quality of the clips is not worse than that of any Pixar. However, Blizzard does not have a different way.

PUBG / Fortnite

The 2017 year. Genre – Battle Royale

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, Android, and iOS (Fortnite is also available on Nintendo Switch)

PLAYERUNKNOWNʼS BATTLEGROUNDS

Fans of both games will certainly frown when they see PUBG and Fortnite in the same position. And all because PUBG is a serious “royal battle”, and Fortnite has a reputation for a more fun cartoon game for children (which, of course, is not entirely true). But to give them one position seems to be the most correct decision. In the end, both of them popularized the royal battle genre – they became his face and the most famous (and popular) representatives. And certainly, no one will deny that it was PUBG and Fortnite that formed the genre and set the main trend for online games in recent years.

PUBG – Video Game Review

Destiny 2

The 2017 year. Genre – network shooter with elements of role-playing game

Platforms: PC, PS4, and Xbox One

The grand online shooter created by the authors of the Halo space saga is again about interplanetary travel and an awakened threat from the depths of the universe. For many, Destiny became the first console MMO with a human face, which was easy for even a beginner to understand – if you wanted, it could be played as if it were an ordinary, offline game (however, all the fun was created in the company of friends screaming into the microphone).

In the second part, the authors improved the formula that they came up with, which is especially evident in the additions in which the game was practically rebuilt. Now playing Destiny 2 is a pleasure – both in the storyline campaign and in multiplayer, in which you need to compete in accuracy with other players.

The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild

The 2017 year. Genre – adventure role-playing game

Platforms: Nintendo Switch and Wii U

One of Nintendo’s most highly regarded exclusives. Breath of the Wild has become a new stage in the development of the adventure series The Legend of Zelda. A full-fledged open world and a system of towers in the spirit of Assassinʼs Creed have appeared. The battles were completely reworked, and the protagonist learned to climb mountains and other surfaces. In Breath of the Wild, you have to constantly cook food, change clothes (to go hiking you need to warm up!), And weapons (it breaks down in battle). But the most important thing is the atmosphere of adventure and the opportunity at the very beginning of the game to escape where your eyes look in order to explore the secrets of the world of The Legend of Zelda.

God of War

The 2018 year. Genre – Action

Platform: PS4

A road movie in which the stern demigod Kratos is trying to establish a relationship with his mortal son Atreus. The son, in turn, is trying to live up to the hopes of an almost omnipotent father. Together they embark on a journey to the mountain, where they want to dispel the ashes of the mother of Atreus. God of War turned out to be a brilliant game – and, one might say, no less impressive movie.

Red Dead Redemption 2

The 2018 year. Genre – Action

Platform: PC, PS4 and Xbox One

The main characters of Red Dead Redemption 2 are tired bandits who dream of sailing to Tahiti, where, as it seems to them, freedom and permissiveness reigns. True, the thugs will not succeed – their age has passed, and in new America, they have no place. Rockstar came out with a dramatic and, oddly enough, horribly meditative action movie for those who are tired of flickering in modern blockbusters.

Red Dead Redemption 2 – Video Game Review

Death Stranding

The 2019 year. Genre – courier simulator

Platform: PS4

The experimental work of Japanese game designer Hideo Kojima, who, as promised, released a courier simulator. Some will like Death Stranding (and even seem ingenious), others will infuriate with their leisureliness. Trying to play is worth it anyway to at least decide which side you are on in the debate about Kojima’s achievements.

FIFA

It comes out every year. Genre – football simulator

Platforms: PC, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch

One of the most popular ways to resolve sports disputes peacefully. Over the past decade, FIFA has changed a lot, for example, even a storyline campaign has appeared in it, and in the latest issues, they have introduced street football. One thing remains unchanged – it is still the main football game, the success of which is still far from the closest competitors.
